Lauren Canonico, LCSW

Body, Sex and LGBTQ+ Affirmative Psychotherapy

Over the course of my 10+ year career, I have had the privilege of working and consulting across a wide range of settings with patients of all ages including community based outpatient mental health clinics, elementary, middle and high schools across NYC, foster care organizations, clubhouse settings and medical clinics. After directing a mental health clinic and its’ satellite programming for two years, I decided to take my private practice full time and get back to what I love most in this field – transformative work with patients.

I primarily work with individuals in one on one psychotherapy. I have special interest and skill for working with my patients to improve relationship issues, LGBTQ/GSM issues, life transitions, trauma, anxiety, chronic pain and illness and depression among other issues. While I enjoy working with patients across the lifespan, I work especially well with young adults in periods of life transition, whether that is high school to college, adjusting to post college life and those new to NYC.

While I customize my approach for each individual person I work with, taking their unique goals and experiences into consideration, I draw upon Relational and Interpersonal psychoanalytic psychotherapy, anti-oppressive lenses (including Health at Every Size), and intersectional feminism as the deepest foundations for my work. Patients often experience work with me as being more engaged and enlivening than they typically expect of depth oriented therapy, and seek me out precisely because I am not your stereotypical blank faced analyst who just says “mmmhmm” and writes in a notebook. Instead, I am responsive and affirmative in my approach. I seek to create a deeply collaborative, safe and even fun space from which to work with my patients and supervisees.

In addition to my work as a therapist, I am also an Adjunct Professor at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service, where I teach courses on clinical supervision for more experienced social workers, and graduate level courses on topics ranging from assessment and diagnosis to clinical practice. I also offer relationally driven supervision to individuals and groups of clinicians in both private practice and non profit settings.

I welcome any additional questions you might have about me and my personal and professional experiences.
